Achievements, developement and philosophy

Established in the UK in 1999 the Pilates Institute is the largest Pilates teacher training company in the UK. Internationally recognised their faculty has in excess of 25 years both in the fitness industry and the Pilates technique.

The Pilates Institute Method and teacher training programmes are taught worldwide, throughout the UK, and in 28 countries around the world and from 2006 in Hungary too.

Trained in the original technique as designed by Joseph Pilates, the Pilates Institute faculty offer a researched based programme they have developed with great success during the last 6 years.

Michael King, with over 27 years teaching Pilates, Nuala Coombs and Malcolm Muirhead, founding directors of the Pilates Institute are respected throughout the industry and as a company are actively involved with the Pilates Standards UK developing the national standard of Pilates education in the UK.

The Pilates Institute's Fundamental Group Matwork course was adopted by the accreditation body Oxford Cambridge RSA (OCR) as their National standard for the Pilates Technique in 2002 (OCR Level 2-Pilates Based Matwork). This was significant in that it was the first nationally accredited examination worldwide.

The Pilates Institute instructors have a dedication to the technique not only to continue Joseph Pilates innovative work but to utilise current research as it becomes available so that best practice can be taught to their students. In 2004 work began on the Level 3 Matwork qualification (which is the highest level in the UK standard, it requires 240 hours of study and is essential to be registerd as exercise professional) with skills active and The Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs). The Pilates Institute, Alan Herdman, Body Control PilatesR and The Pilates Foundation worked together to create the new standard. This was launched in September 2005 and the Pilates Institute's Matwork Diploma incorporates this qualification. Growth, development and open minded education for all their students is the goal for the Pilates Institute in the future.
